We sing a wide variety of folk music and learn new songs throughout the year.

So, what is folk music? 

Traditional folk music is music that grows out of the traditions, stories and everyday lives of ordinary people. It has been passed down through generations, often by singing and playing rather than through formal music education.

It can mean different things in different countries and communities, but folk songs often tell stories about love, work, home, history, migration, celebration, hardship and local life.

Folk songs can be joyful, moving, funny, rousing or reflective. From traditional Yorkshire songs and Celtic ballads to sea shanties and contemporary folk, there's a huge variety to discover.

And folk music isn't necessarily old-fashioned.

Contemporary folk musicians continue to write new songs using traditional influences, so the boundary

between “traditional” and “modern” folk can be quite fluid.
