Do I need to be a good singer?
Not at all!
We welcome singers of all abilities, including complete beginners.
Do I have to audition or be able to read music?
No! There are no auditions, no previous experience is necessary and there is no requirement to be able to read music.
You will join a small, friendly group of like-minded singers, who simply love to sing and will, most likely, not have had any prior experience.
Your voice will soon blend with the group and you will be taught by our professional Musical Director, Matthew, who will quickly help to build your confidence.What should I expect at my free taster session?
What happens at my taster session?
Never been to a choir before? Don’t worry — we’ll make you feel very welcome.
Your first session is simply an opportunity to meet us, have a sing and see if Yorkshire Folk Choir is for you. There’s no audition and no pressure to join.
Come along a little before the rehearsal starts. You'll be met at the door and made to feel very welcome. Someone will make you a drink, introduce you to some of the friendly choir and get you comfortable.
Matthew, our Musical Director, will lead you through the rehearsal and teach you some of the songs we’re currently learning.
You'll get a taste of our music, our rehearsals and the atmosphere of the choir — as well as finding out about performances, social events and everything else that comes with being part of the group.
If you've enjoyed yourself, you're very welcome to come back and join us.
If it's not quite your thing, that's absolutely fine too!

I'm nervous about coming on my own. Can I bring someone?
Absolutely! We all know how daunting that first time can be, so feel free to bring a friend or partner along if you wish.

How often do you rehearse?
We rehearse once a week on Thursday evenings during term-time, 7:30 - 9pm
As term times can be different across the region, please check out our rehearsal calendar for exact dates.
Where do you rehearse?
From 8th October 2026 we will be rehearsing in the Tong Village School Room in Tong, BD4 0RP
How do I join the Yorkshire Folk Choir?
When you have been along to your free taster session we will give you an information sheet with all the joining details on.

Are there any restrictions?
We are a fully inclusive adult choir, so the only stipulation is that you are 18 or over.
Our rehearsal room is wheelchair accessible and we make every effort to ensure that any performance venues are accessible for anybody who wishes to attend.
How much are membership fees?
Our membership fees are £22.00 per month, payable by Standing Order. The fees are based on an annual cost, therefore are paid every month even when there is no rehearsal.
The membership fees cover the cost of paying the professional Musical Director, venue hire, creation of all the musical resources, performance licences for all the songs that we use, copyright fees to the publishers and maintenance of our website.
If you are unable or prefer not to commit to attendance every week, a fee of £7 per session is payable "on the door".
Do I have to take part in performances?
Members are invited to take part as much or as little as they like and are under no pressure to perform.
Although the performances are well-organised and create an exciting experience for the choir, some members may choose to wait and build their confidence before committing.
There is usually no cost to take part in a choir performance however, you may have to pay for your own transport and refreshments where appropriate.
